What do you get when you mix beautiful weather, a great outdoor setting, and an fringe activity that seems to interest eccentrics of all ages? You get the New York Unicycle club.
A really crowded meeting at Grant's Tomb yesterday. I think there were probably about 30-40 riders who showed up. The weather was insanely beautiful which probably helped. I rode for about an hour, then I skated for a bit and then jugged for about 1/2 an hour (yes I juggle outside. Deal with it). I had one really great one footed wheel walk. I also helped Sha with her handstands. She has a lot of natural talent, but the needs to focus on keeping her hands closer and not arching her back as much.
So, I've got to say that I am a little jealous of the success of the unicycling club. I know, I know, I've been there on weekends where there was almost no one around, but this past meeting the joint was JUMPING. Juggling should really be getting 40-50 people every week. There should be more people at juggling than at unicycling. (that is just my personal prejudice). I think it helps unicycling that:
- It is on the weekend
- It is free
- It is a good family activity
- Chicks dig unicycling more than juggling
- Ken and Dave pour their heart into making it a friendly atmosphere and they blog and take pictures about every meeting.
I was talking briefly with Emele and another kid (sorry, I'm bad with names) and the other kid was talking about going to juggling classes on Monday nights. The kid was all like "There was a guy who calls himself 'Paris'...". I was like..."Uh, that's not what he calls himself, that's his NAME". And then the kid started talking about Rod K as a juggling teacher. It was weird. It was looking at the other side of a mirror.
Someone started practicing bag pipes for a while and they were very out of tune.
